HOW TO LOOM KNIT LATTICE CABLES
Lattice cables are a big series of very small cable crosses. They look best if an odd number of stitches is used. To these stitches you may add any edging so as to stop rolling for scarves and blankets. Or the Lattice panel can be part of a garment design such as the center front of an aran sweater.
For the hem of a lattice panel, use any non-roll stitch. Garter Stitch, seed stitch and ribbing all quality. Often, ribbing will match the width of the lattice cable best.
The lattice design takes 4 rows that are repeated over and over. Beginning at the right hand edge of the work:
Row 1: slip stitch 1. Wrap and knit all other pegs
Row 2: slip stitch 1. Knit stitches 2 & 3. Lift stitches 2 & 3. Replace stitch 3 on the peg that originally held stich 2. Replace stitch 2 on the peg that originally held stitch 3. Work across the board, working every pair of stitches as 2 & 3 were worked, except for the final pair. Knit both of those but don't cross them.
Row 3: work exactly like Row 1.
Row 4: slip stitch 1. Knit stitch 2 but don't involve it in a cable cross. Lift stitches 3 & 4. Replace stitch 3 on the peg that originally held stich 4. Replace stitch 4 on the peg that originally held stitch 3. Work across the board, working every pair of stitches as 3 & 4 were worked. At the end of the row knit the final stitch. It isn't involved in a cable cross.
NOTES:
1. slipping a stitch means we don't wrap or knit it.
2. The alternating of left and right cable crosses along with the 1 stitch offset between rows 2 & 4 creates the appearance of lattice.
