Knittax/knitking machines can knit wonderful pattern wheels using a very unusual mechanism; pattern wheels that are installed easily beneath the carriage. The company published a series of "muster karten" that give instructions for creating many fabrics in the form of tabular instructions. These are available as free downloads on machineknittingetc.com but they are in German. Below is a sample card and below that is the instructions for using the cards in English. Even in English, they can be hard to follow so here's some help:

*patterning instructions begin on page 29 of the AM3 manual. These are written a bit more clearly than those in the tables.

*Cam box means carriage.

IN THE MUSTER KARTEN TABLE

* A is displaying which pattern wheel to use

*B is showing the correct position for the side lever

*C is telling you when to change yarn colors for multicolor work

*D is describing the position of the cam control buttons. A downward arrow seems to indicate that the button should be pushed away from you. I find that a little unexpected but it's what works.

*E is showing where the needle retractor buttons should be placed.

*F is for stitch dial settings on the inner ring of the dial. Changing the number on this dial tells the carriage what needle to push into hold first. Thereafter it will select needle at intervals determined by the pattern wheels.

*Item "G" refers to a needle shifter. This accessory is now quite rare. It is only needed for some stitch patterns. There's a photo of the device below.

*H is describing how many rows to knit before changing settings.

*Needle spacing is a bit over 5mm apart. This makes it a standard gauge machine at the top of the standard range which also includes 4.5 and 5mm spaced models. Most Japanese made machines are 4.5, most European are 5.
